The ruling may be appealed.According to the ruling, Lee Hai-peng started working in tourism decades ago after retiring from the military and was recruited by Chinese intelligence officers during one of his trips to China. He enlisted the aid of his two sons, Captain Lee Yu-sheng (李輿聖) and Lee Chu-hsiang, as well as former acquaintance Lee Wen-sheng (李文生) to obtain military secrets for about six years before discovery, the court said. The Investigation Bureau verified that the intelligence the defendants gave to China was genuine with the Ministry of National Defense, the court said.In the first High Court trial, Lee Wen-sheng was given three years and two months, while Lee Yu-sheng and Lee Chu-hsiang received two years and two months and two years and four months respectively.During a retrial, Lee Wen-sheng’s sentence was increased from three years and two months to 15 years, while Lee Yu-sheng was sentenced to two years and one month, a month shorter than the initial sentence.Lee Chu-hsiang was sentenced to 10 years and six months, a large increase from the initial sentence of two years and four months. The first retrial ruling stated that the defendants’ crimes were severe, and that they became Chinese spies despite the nation’s support and training, the court said. The 15-year sentence for Lee Wen-sheng and two year, one month sentence for Lee Yu-sheng were finalized by the Supreme Court in December last year after their appeals were rejected.Additional reporting by CNA新聞來源:TAIPEI TIMES
