在中国国家主席习近平即将于9月下旬对美国进行国事访问前夕，白宫北门廊（North Portico）的修缮工程也已接近尾声。随着施工脚手架周二拆除，自7月以来一直被遮蔽的白宫正面立柱重新亮相。

这项于今年6月启动的工程，外立面保护罩已于上周末先行拆除。白宫官员通报称，整个北门廊修缮项目预计将于下周正式完工。按照外交日程，川普定于9月24日为习近平举行国宴，白宫预计将在访问前完成北门廊周边施工场地的清理。

北门廊于1830年安德鲁·杰克逊总统任内建成。由于年代久远、长期遭受风化侵蚀，其石砌和灰泥外墙需要全面翻新。此次工程除修缮外立面外，还包括提升安保设施，以及升级面向宾夕法尼亚大道一侧的大门。

川普此前向媒体表示，他亲自注意到门廊的“糟糕的状况”，因此决定下令大修。这也是他推动白宫行政官邸及华盛顿多处联邦资产改造的一部分。川普上周证实，南草坪的总统直升机停机坪已经完工。

相比之下，白宫目前规模最大的建设项目——宴会厅及地下综合体——仍在加紧施工。由于新宴会厅尚未建成，此次国宴将在现有白宫场地及周边在建区域内举行。

宴会厅项目面临着多项法律争议，争议焦点之一是政府能否在未经国会批准的情况下推进建设。最高法院8月31日批准了政府的紧急申请，允许工程在诉讼期间继续进行。最高法院尚未对这项工程的合法性做出裁决。
